Grilled Asparagus

Grilled Asparagus is a perfect appetizer or side dish for an all-from-the-grill dinner or lunch; grilling unexpectedly heightens the natural grassy flavor of fresh asparagus. A welcome change from the more common steamed asparagus, grilled asparagus is easy to prepare; the only challenge is to use asparagus stalks of similar diameter for even cooking. We recommend using very fresh asparagus, preferably within a day of purchase. For ease of operation, use commercially available minced garlic and crushed ginger. Crushed ginger is available at Indian or Middle Eastern grocery stores or on-line.  Try some Grilled Asparagus with Indonesian Chicken for a colorful, tasty dinner.

Grilled Asparagus

Preparation:

  1. Rinse the asparagus, discard any broken stalks.
  2. Trim ½” to 1” from the bottom of each asparagus stalk using a sharp knife to cut the stalk end without resistance. There may be the occasional tough stalk which requires a bit more to be trimmed from it. Place the trimmed asparagus in a rectangle container with a fitted cover which is just large enough to hold them.
  3. Add the garlic, ginger, oil and soy sauce, cover the container and shake in a circular motion, so the stalks roll over each other and are evenly coated with the garlic, ginger, oil and soy mixture.
  4. Heat the grill to a medium heat. Using a perforated metal spatula, spread the asparagus in a single layer with the tips toward the cooler part of the grill. If you are using very thin asparagus, roll them back and forth on the grill as they will burn easily. You can grill up to 2 pounds at once on a five-burner grill.
  5. Grill the asparagus for 2 to 4 minutes on each side, turning with the spatula until lightly charred all around. Remove the asparagus from the grill to a serving platter.
  6. Serve warm or at room temperature.
